"Interestingness!
Besides being a five syllable word suitable for tongue twisters, it is also an amazing new Flickr Feature.
There are lots of things that make a photo 'interesting' (or not) in the Flickr. Where the clickthroughs are coming from; who comments on it and when; who marks it as a favorite; its tags and many more things which are constantly changing. Interestingness changes over time, as more and more fantastic photos and stories are added to Flickr.
We've added some pages (and changed some existing ones) to help you explore Flickr's most interesting photos. Before you start though, you might want to take your phone off the hook, send your boss to an executive training session and block off some time on your schedule, because we don't think you're going to walking away from your screen any time soon. Beautiful, amazing, moving, striking - explore and discover some of Flickr's Finest."

Sponsor | BStabler | Aug 2, 2005 9:24pm | | i concur I spent quite a deal of time exploring interestingnessess and I also noticed that "Your photos" are also now ranked by interestingnessity as well by views, favorites, and comments. But who is to judge the interestingnessability of a pic? |

|
Sponsor | uma | Aug 2, 2005 10:41pm | | But somebody - and someway - has got to make that judgement. Whatever, the feature is interesting in itself and I spend a lot of time savouring it. :) |

Sponsor | Naruwan | Aug 3, 2005 4:52am | This PC magazine article explains how they figure out which pics are most 'interesting'.
Here's an excerpt:
""Interestingness" is a photo-ranking algorithm based on stored data about member behavior around various images.
The feature shows which of the 31 million photos available on the Flickr Web site are favored by its members.
A recently added "Calendr" features the most "interesting" photos from any given day.
The stored data that helps to determine to what extent a picture is "interesting" focuses on the traffic that a given picture receives as well as user comments, tags and ratings associated with that picture.
"'Interestingness' is similar to the concept of relevance in a traditional Web search," said Bradley Horowitz, director of technology development for Yahoo Search and Marketplace."

Sponsor | BStabler | Aug 3, 2005 7:15am | | cool thanx naruwan.....so if i get this right flickr's interestingness is subjective based on the combined effect of flickr user's browsing characteristics......which means in order for the thing to function at it's peak all flickr users should be encouraged to browse images as much as possible and not be stingy with adding favorites and comments.....near as i can tell at least |
